ISO Rating
Public Protection Classification (PPC) is the countrywide classification system used by the Insurance Services Office (ISO) to grade a community's local fire protection. This grade is then used to set property insurance rates. The public fire protection of a community is graded using ISO's Fire Suppression Rating Schedule to develop the community's classification. The PPC rating is based on:
- Emergency communications systems, including facilities for the public to report fires, staffing, training, certification of telecommunicators, and facilities for dispatching fire departments
- The fire department, including equipment, staffing, training, and geographic deployment of fire companies
- The water supply system, including the inspection and flow testing of hydrants and a careful evaluation of the amount of available water compared with the amount needed to suppress fires
- Community efforts to reduce the risk of fire, including fire prevention codes and enforcement, public fire safety education, and fire investigation programs
The City of Decatur has been assigned a PPC rating of 3/8B. The first number of this split classification is the PPC for structures within 1,000 feet of a fire hydrant and five road miles of a fire station. The second number is for structures more than 1,000 feet from a fire hydrant but within five road miles of a fire station.
